Abstract
Background: Millions of people worldwide suffer from chronic pain, which has a significant impact on one's physical, mental, and social well-being. Traditional pharmaceutical therapies are linked to concerns like reliance, negative side effects, and exorbitant expenses, and they frequently offer little relief. Physical therapies, mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and relaxation techniques are examples of non-pharmacological approaches that have shown promise. Because of their ability to provide patient-centered care and their frequent, direct interactions with patients, nurses are essential to the implementation of these treatments.
Aim: This paper aims to examining how nurses can manage chronic pain with non-pharmacological therapy. It evaluates the effectiveness of these strategies, looks into how they may be incorporated into nursing practices, and identifies areas for improvement and challenges.
Methods: A comprehensive analysis of peer-reviewed literature was carried out with the aid of databases including Scopus, CINAHL, and PubMed. Included were studies that looked at non-pharmacological therapies that were led or assisted by nurses. The sorts of therapies used, patient outcomes (such as pain relief or an improvement in quality of life), and nursing practices related to these techniques were the main variables examined.
Results: Results show that non-pharmacological treatments greatly enhance functional outcomes, mental health, and pain severity. Through ongoing monitoring, individualized treatment plans, and patient education, nurses help bring about these improvements. However, obstacles to wider adoption were noted, including insufficient training, a lack of resources, and uneven institutional support.
Conclusion: Nurses are integral to the success of non-pharmacological chronic pain management. Addressing systemic barriers and enhancing nurse training can expand the reach and effectiveness of these interventions, improving patient outcomes and advancing holistic care practices.
