Culturally Sensitive Approaches to Patient Care: Insights from Nursing Technicians and Health Assistants in Saudi Arabia's Diverse Communities

Abstract

Saudi Arabia's healthcare system serves a culturally diverse population, necessitating culturally sensitive approaches to patient care. Nursing technicians and health assistants play a crucial role in bridging the cultural gap between patients and healthcare providers. This qualitative study explores the insights and experiences of nursing technicians and health assistants in providing culturally competent care in Saudi Arabia's diverse communities. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants from various healthcare settings in Saudi Arabia. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key themes and subthemes. The findings highlight the importance of cultural awareness, effective communication, family involvement, and religious considerations in delivering culturally sensitive care. Participants also identified challenges, such as language barriers and cultural misunderstandings, and suggested strategies for overcoming these barriers, including cultural competence training and the use of interpreters. The study provides valuable insights for healthcare providers, policymakers, and educators to enhance cultural competence and improve patient outcomes in Saudi Arabia's multicultural healthcare environment.
